OpenStreetMap for
Garmin GPS Units

This page contains free GPS maps for Garmin units. The maps were generated from OpenStreetMap data by a program I wrote. I cannot guarantee the quality of the map. I do my best while converting the maps, but my conversion tool and OpenStreetMap are projects in development. There are still thing that need to be done in my converter and there are still blank areas on OSM map.

On the other hand the OSM is Free. If you find something missing you can simply add it. It is really easy - read in OSM Beginners' Guide or Map Making Overview

Map below presents the actual coverage of the maps. You can use it to check if the area you are interested in is modeled in OSM. The process of generating Garmin maps takes some time, so on map you can proably find streets not contained in GPS map. So be aware. Currently the maps are updated monthly. I am working on making the process faster.

  • All maps now with source files in Polish Format (.mp). You can use GPSMapEdit or MapEdit++ to edit them and cGPSmapper to compile them into your own Garmin map.
  • All maps also as one packed IMG file. Just unpack it to your SD card/GPS Unit.
  • Added Denmark, Czech Republic and New Zealand.

  • New version of software capable of using database. Now it is possible to convert automaticaly large areas. Still fighting with coast lines and generation of sea polygons.
  • Fixed bug with missing POIs name.
  • Added Cyprus and Malaysia. Still working on Australia.

  • Reuploaded map for UK and Ireland, because the file on the server was not complete. From now on I will check all the new files with MD5 checksums.

  • End of roads laying very close to each other are joined automatically. This should improve routing, because of lot of missaligned nodes in OSM.
  • Problems with maps that couldn't be sent to GPS unit disapeared. Cause is still unknown.
  • Map of Europe ready to be transfered to GPS unit is ready for download. Be aware that it connot be used in MapSource.
